Montana Resources named Governor’s Exporter of the Year

Governor Steve Bullock and the Montana District Export Council today announced the winner of the 2016 Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award, Montana Resources, LLC.

Governor Steve Bullock presenting the Exporter of the Year award in the Montana Capitol.“Montana Resources is a leader among exporters in Montana and a great example of a business contributing to the success of our state,” Bullock said. “I appreciate the opportunity to highlight and thank Montana’s thriving manufacturing industry and export economy.”

Montana Resources operates an open pit copper-molybdenum mine in Butte, as well as crushers and a concentrator facility where raw ores are processed into high-quality copper and molybdenum concentrates.

Operating in Butte since 1986, the company employs over 350 full-time personnel. The company’s international sales accounted for almost half of its total revenue in 2016, making it one of Montana’s leading international exporters.

The Exporter of the Year Award was presented by Governor Bullock today at the Manufacturing and International Trade Day luncheon at the Montana State Capitol. Governor Bullock also presented the Manufacturer of the Year Award to WestPaw Design in Bozeman. WestPaw Design has been instrumental in encouraging manufacturing and business growth in the Gallatin Valley.

Closely affiliated with the U.S. Commerce Department’s Export Assistance Centers and the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, the Montana District Export Council (DEC) is one of 59 nationally working to strengthen American exports. Statement on Berkeley Pit waterfowl mitigation

Montana Resources and Atlantic Richfield Co. jointly operate a comprehensive waterfowl observation and hazing program at the Berkeley Pit, under the direction of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Montana. This program is designed to minimize contact of waterfowl with the water of the pit.

The observation and hazing program provides a framework of actions. Beginning in 1995, mine personnel have used various tools including boats, spotlights, shotgun and rifle noises, fireworks and electronic devices that emit noises intended to scare birds away.

On November 28, an unprecedented number of late-season migrating snow geese, estimated to be in the tens of thousands, were in the Butte area. Mine personnel immediately implemented the steps specified in the plan to prevent birds from landing.

As a result of these mitigation measures, many thousands of snow geese were deterred from landing and continued their southerly migration. Despite around-the-clock efforts to haze the geese off the pit, snow geese landed in the pit and several thousand birds that remained have not survived.

MR and ARCO are working closely with federal and state agencies to evaluate the conditions and circumstances that contributed to this event and evaluate and assess other or additional measures that are appropriate and can be added to the program to protect migratory waterfowl in the future.

Montana Resources Receives Governor’s Safety Award

Montana Resources Believes in Courageous Safety Leadership – Receives Governor’s Safety Award

Mike McGivern receiving the Governor's Safety AwardOn March 16, 2015, Montana Resources received the Governor’s Safety Award in Helena at the Montana Manufacturing and Trade Chamber Banquet. Montana Resources received the award due to its safety record and compliance with the Montana Safety Culture Act. Pam Bucy (Commissioner of the Dept. of Labor and Industry) presented the award to Mike McGivern, with Governor Bullock and Ambassador Baucus in attendance.

Montana Resources is a copper mine in Butte that employs 350 people and produces 70 million pounds of copper and 8 million pounds of molybdenum annually. Montana Resources began operations in 1986 and has been mining the Continental Pit since that time.

“Our safety performance has been on a steady path of improvement for the last several years and we felt we were in the position to apply for the Governor’s Safety Award which we are honored to receive,” said Mike McGivern, Safety Manager of Montana Resources.

Montana Resources has currently worked 4.4 million hours and 2090 days without a lost time accident and has consistently stayed well below the industry average accident rate.

Mike McGivern credits both top management and a dedicated workforce for the strong safety performance at the mine. “Our President believes zero incidents are achievable and expects all 350 employees to align with that philosophy. The mining environment has numerous hazards but our workforce knows how to assess the hazards and mitigate the risk. If it’s not safe, we don’t do it until we make it safe.”

While the mine prescribes and follows through with rigorous safety requirements that all mines are subjected to, the real key has been to build a safety culture that creates a positive attitude around safety. In 2008, the mine embarked on a program called Courageous Safety Leadership with the vision of improving the safety culture. “At the end of the day, the most valuable thing that comes out of a mine is the miner. We understand that and work together to achieve that vision every day.”
